Historic Rainfall in Multan:  48-Year Record to be Broken in 2024

MULTAN, August 28, 2024 — Multan, known for its dry climate and scorching summers, witnessed an unusual weather event this week. A 48-year-old rainfall record was broken. The city was hit by unprecedented flooding that not only brought much-needed relief but also left a lasting impact on the city's infrastructure and daily life.

Historic Heavy Rainfall

On August 26, 2024, Multan recorded an incredible 267 mm of rain in 24 hours, surpassing the previous record set in 1976. The downpour, caused by an unusually strong monsoon system and atmospheric instability, overwhelmed the city's drainage system and posed significant challenges to residents.

The previous record for the most rainfall in a single day was 236 millimetres, recorded almost half a century ago. The 2024 event not only surpassed that record, but also set a new standard for rainfall in the region, highlighting the potential impacts of climate change on local weather patterns.

Impact on the city

Heavy rains caused widespread flooding in many parts of Multan. Roads, homes and shops were flooded, causing disruption and damage across the city. Critical infrastructure including roads, bridges and utilities were damaged, causing power and water outages in several areas.

Local authorities and emergency services sprung into immediate action to counter the immediate impacts of the floods. Rescue operations have been launched to help people stranded by  rising water levels, as well as efforts  to clear debris and restore basic services.

Despite these challenges, the rains have been a double-edged sword. While they have alleviated some of the region's long-standing water scarcity problems, they have also highlighted how vulnerable the city's infrastructure is to extreme weather events.

Weather trends and climate change

The record rains in Multan have sparked discussions about the wider impacts of climate change. Meteorologists and climate experts say such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent as global temperatures rise. The intensity and frequency of monsoon rains are expected to fluctuate more unpredictably, potentially causing more severe and frequent weather extremes.

For Multan, which is traditionally  relatively dry, the recent heavy rains were a stark reminder that improved urban planning and  drainage systems are needed to cope with such extreme weather events. The city's response to this situation will be crucial in preparing for future climate-related challenges.

Looking forward

As Multan begins to rebuild and repair,  focus is likely to shift to longer-term strategies to manage and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. This could include improving infrastructure resilience, investing in flood protection systems, and adopting sustainable practices to reduce the city's ecological footprint.

The 2024 rains highlighted the importance of preparedness and adaptability in the face of changing climate patterns. Now, Multan is battling the effects of  historic rains, rebuilding, and preparing for an uncertain weather future.
